# Velvet Chess sound sources

All 18 effects are newly mixed for Velvet Chess at 48 kHz stereo. They combine Kenney percussion/interface recordings with original synthesized bass and pitched percussion. No Freesound recording is included.

- The ten distributed source clips are Ogg Vorbis (nominally 96–240 kbps, depending on the clip), not lossless masters. Copies and their original license files are in the source download under audio-source/.
- Standard playback: AAC in M4A, 90 kbps encoding target. Average bitrate varies for these short effects (approximately 72–92 kbps); container overhead is additional.
- High playback: MP3 at 320 kbps CBR. This preserves the new mix with less additional compression; re-encoding does not restore detail already absent from the Ogg sources.
- Both sets have 48 kHz stereo delivery. Original recordings are 44.1 kHz; original synthesized layers are rendered at 48 kHz. Resampling is not additional recorded detail.
- Build: python scripts/build-sounds.py (NumPy and ffmpeg with AAC/libmp3lame). Then python scripts/build-downloads.py. Output manifest is dist/audio/manifest.json.

New synthesis and mixing code: GNU GPL v3, alongside the application. The original Kenney recordings retain CC0.
